Dark Room Shadow Play

As a child I beleived shadows were quite fascinating, they seemed to take on personalities of their own depending on the light.

This week I decided to convert the art studio into a dark room for the children to create, play and explore silhouette art as a fun form of art medium.

Using shadow boxes and multi colored click lights, the children made their own unique sculptures to cast shadows. We experimented with translucent object like plastic cups and plates as well as opaque objects like wood blocks and pipe cleaners. Once they got familiar with these concepts, they were free to explore multiple areas in the studio playing with different lights and props.

Towards the end of the lesson we’d end things with party lights to play freeze dance.
