The Invisible String Project

This project is based on a book ‘The Invisible String’ by Patrice Karst.

THE INVISIBLE STRING is a very simple approach to overcoming the fear of loneliness or separation with an imaginative flair that children can easily identify with and remember. Here is a warm and delightful lesson teaching young and old that we aren’t ever really alone and reminding children (and adults!) that when we are loved beyond anything we can imagine. “People who love each other are always connected by a very special String, made of love. Even though you can’t see it with your eyes, you can feel it deep in your heart, and know that you are always connected to the ones you love.”

Concept: To create a self portrait on canvas with a hanging string ~ Symbolic of their own invisible strings and how we are all connected.Materials:

~ Tempera Paint

~Canvas

~ Black Marker

~ String

~ Beads

The Process:

Each child is given a string with a heart tied to the end. As they begin to thread their string with beads, encourage them to identify colors, create patterns and count as they go! For younger children- they will have more success with large beads and a pipe cleaner instead of string to ensure the beads stay on.

It’s time to draw!
Self portraits are always fun to do with the children. The way they choose to interpret themselves is amazing to watch. In preschool it’s helpful for the children to make observations before drawing. Pointing out each facial feature is important ( such as eyes, nose, mouth etc.) so they remember to incorporate it in their artwork.
Lastly, once their drawings are complete they apply tempera paint as a final touch.

Note: This project will be on display at this years CMP Art Show!
We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
