Room 11 was curious about apples. We wanted to know how apples grow, where apples grow and what are the different types of apples that we could eat.
We started our exploration with a book called Apples by Erika L. Shore. We learned that apples are planted from seeds that grow into an apple tree. Apple trees grow in orchards. A grouping of apples is called a bushel.
Our taste test began with observing different apples (red Cosmic apples and green Granny Smith apples) and describing how they looked, felt and smelled.
Apples Look Like:
-red
-green
-round
Apples Feel Like:
-hard
-round
-cold
-smooth
Apples Smell Like:
-sweet
Next we cut open our apples and discovered that all apples have a special inside shape. The inside of the apple has a flower or star that holds the apple’s seeds. Our apple had 6 seeds.
Each of the children were able to sample both the red Cosmic apples and the green Granny Smith apples. Afterwards, we took a poll to see which apple each child liked the best. Our results were 5 classmates liked the red Cosmic apples best while 6 classmates (including Ms. Melissa) liked the green Granny Smith apples best.
After our taste test, we used our remaining apples to create apple prints using paint!
