Room 11 has been LOVING popcorn so much that we invested in an air popper so we can pop our own popcorn and add in the toppings that we like best.
Thinking of a way to incorporate a “lesson” into popping popcorn, I decided to teach the children about the 5 senses.
The 5 senses include sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.
Before we turned on the air popper to pop the popcorn, I passed around some popcorn kernels and allowed the children to see, touch, smell and hear (not taste).
Next we poured the kernels in the air popper and discussed the sounds we heard. Next we plugged the air popper in. While the popcorn was popping we discussed what we were seeing, what sounds we heard and what smells we could smell (we all decided we LOVED the smell of popcorn).
Once the popcorn was all popped, we noticed that each kernel had a different shape. We noticed that the popcorn was warm and the kernels had changed shape from small yellow circles to big fluffy clouds!
The most exciting part of our popcorn experiment was getting to choose if we wanted popcorn with butter and salt or popcorn with butter and sprinkles (parent approved). Allowing the children to make the best choice for themselves gives them autonomy.
When we finished eating our popcorn, we made a visual chart of popcorn and how each of the 5 senses have a part.
