Environment As A Third Teacher

At Carmel Mountain Preschool, we see the classroom environment as an important component of the learning process, or as the “third teacher.” This means that the physical space of the classroom is intentionally designed to be inviting, stimulating, and flexible to support children’s exploration and discovery. Using natural light, open spaces, and aesthetically pleasing materials, the environment is crafted to inspire curiosity and creativity. Every element in the classroom, from the arrangement of furniture to the selection of materials, is thoughtfully chosen to encourage children to engage with their surroundings and with each other.

In this approach, accessible materials are crucial. Items are placed within children’s reach so they can choose and use them independently, encouraging autonomy and decision-making skills. Open spaces allow for movement and collaboration, while cozy, well-defined areas provide spots for quiet reflection or focused activities. The environment is continually adapted based on the children’s interests and the projects they are working on, making it a responsive space. By creating a well-organized and beautiful classroom, we help children feel respected and valued, which nurtures their enthusiasm for learning and exploration.
