“I believe life is full of adventure, creativity, and exploration. Take the time to play in the sea, run in the mountains, observe the world around you and spend quality time with the ones you love the most. Record your life and share your story, it is meaningful and important!” – Julie Goldstein, Master Artist & Art Studio Teacher at CMP
Throughout my career, I have always worked as an educator and balanced my time between my studio and teaching. I have experience teaching all ages. Most of my teaching positions were part- time so that I could focus on my studio work. From 2000-2004, I taught art in a public high school in New Jersey. From 2004-2008, I was the Art Education Director in a non-profit educational facility. In 2008, my husband and I relocated to Southern California and I taught at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
In 2013, I had my son Frankie and decided to work from home to be with him. After 1 year at home, I missed teaching but wasn’t ready to leave Frankie. That is when Carmel Mountain Preschool came to my rescue. Currently, I teach art to the children three days a week and the best part of my day is knowing that my son is a student at CMP! To learn more about my story of becoming the studio art teacher at CMP (and the development of the art program) please read my blog, “Getting to Know the Glenn: A Special Place of Learning at CMP.”
I feel strongly about art education and inspiring young minds to believe in their creativity. Children of all ages deserve to explore and experience art. My journey is driven by my passion for documenting and portraying my story based on personal experiences. It is not always easy but perseverance and passion have driven me to succeed in my career. I feel so fortunate to balance my life as a mother, wife, artist and educator…every day.
As a visual artist and printmaker, I create works that draw inspiration from the natural environment, the sea, urban culture and experiences from my travels.
In various multimedia works with mediums such as paper and fabric, I mix lithographic and woodcut printmaking techniques with sewing, embroidery, and other traditional “women’s arts.”
The result is a hybrid, contemporary style with urban motifs and lively depictions of friends and family.
My work is inspired by my personal experiences, storytelling, and my deep appreciation for the sea. I encourage those who view my art to feel inspired, empowered and motivated to share their stories, reflecting on what is important in their lives.
I have been creating and exhibiting my works for over 10 years. My woodcuts have been exhibited all over the world including galleries in New York City, Japan, France and Brazil. Each body of work tells a story focusing on personal experience, my connection to the sea, iconic timeless figures that resemble strength, courage, femininity and often times motherhood.
The “Dear Sea, Love Me” Exhibition at Cal State San Marcos
“Dear Sea, Love Me” is my first retrospective exhibition. There are 35 woodcuts and 5 bodies of work in this show. Each piece is hand-printed from hand carved woodcuts. The show displays a video that demonstrates my process from start to finish as well as an “Interactive Journal” that encourages students, faculty and viewers to also create and be inspired by the materials and process.
The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular library hours. For more information, please see the information below.
