The signs of spring have been present for a while now in San Diego and in our Glenn, but we were so excited to celebrate the official start of Spring on March 20th.
We had fun going on a scavenger hunt looking for all that spring brings. The kids felt very official with their clip boards and found lots of flowers, ants, lizards, birds, butterflies, and snails. And now that the weather is getting warmer it’s time to switch out what’s growing in the garden.
The kids helped me harvest some of our cool season vegetables like carrots, cauliflower, and lettuce to make room for those warm season veggies and fruits like tomatoes, squash, and strawberries. You could see the pride in their faces as they harvested them. Then we enjoyed the “fruits of our labor.” It is so wonderful to see the kids all enjoying the fresh, organic produce straight from the garden. Some of the kids even got to try some edible flower petals (nasturtium).
Lastly, we got to meet our new resident in the nature lab, Edie, the bearded dragon. Not to worry, no fire breathers here, just a docile lizard that the kids loved meeting.
If you are hoping to grow your own veggies and are new to gardening, here’s a link to Master Gardener’s planting guide which covers the basics of what to plant and when. The Old Farmer’s Almanac also has a great planting calendar for San Diego here.
