What is color theory?:
Color theory, put simply, is the relationship between colors and our emotions. Colors work together and affect both our feelings and perceptions.
Introducing color theory to young children can help enhance their comprehension of how colors and emotions both interact and influence one another. Early exposure to colors and emotions can empower children to make more informed and intentional color choices to express their own unique artistic style. Furthermore, it can stimulate their imaginative thinking and awareness of colors and emotions that are brought to life in various forms of art and design.
For this particular theme, Room 1B discussed a number of different ways we see emotions as color. Together we chose 9 different colors to help reference an emotional response from our brain. Our observations went as follows:
Once finished charting our color and feeling correlations, we used a color wheel to discover different objects around our classroom to sort onto it. As we explored the classroom to find new items we were reminded of our safe space. In our safe space we have plush figures called ‘Feeling Buddies’. These feeling buddies help us to reference different emotions based on facial expression. The students used these tools to help separate the emotions into the coordinating colors we discussed during our group time. They were able to accurately sort; happy, sad, angry, frustrated, calm and disappointed. Overall, this was a wonderful learning opportunity for our 4 year old class and gave us the opportunity to reflect on how the world around us directly correlates to how we are feeling.
