Fine motor activities help children strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers. These skills are important for tasks like writing, cutting, buttoning clothes, and using utensils. Children build these skills best through play so here are a few activities you can try at home:
- Play with playdough by squeezing, pinching, and making shapes.
- Cut with child-safe scissors to practice hand strength and control.
- String beads or pasta onto yarn or pipe cleaners.
- Build with blocks or LEGOs to encourage finger coordination.
- Draw, color, and paint using crayons, markers, or paintbrushes. *A fun tip is to break crayons in half to encourage a proper grasp.
- Use tweezers or tongs to pick up pom-poms, cotton balls, or small toys.
- Create crafts by gluing, tearing paper, and placing stickers.
These activities are don’t have to be picture perfect, the goal is to have fun while giving little hands plenty of opportunities to grow stronger. At preschool, we include fine motor activities every day through art, sensory play, building, and hands-on learning and that helps prepare children for future success.
