Building Block Drawings

drawing shapes at preschool

In the Art Studio, our kindergarteners explored how many artists begin by drawing from life, breaking down what they see into simple shapes and drawing each one to build a complete picture.

In this project the children used building blocks to create their own forms. Next, they carefully observed their creations and drew them using a black marker, outlining each shape before filling them in with colors that matched the blocks.

Materials

  • Colored foam building blocks
  • Cardstock
  • Black Sharpie markers
  • Colored markers

Steps

1. Build: Use the colored foam building blocks to stack and create your own unique form.

2. Draw: Carefully observe your creation and draw its outline on cardstock using a black Sharpie. Look closely at the different shapes and how they fit together.

3. Color: Use colored markers to fill in each shape, matching the colors to the building blocks you see.

Through this activity, the children practiced looking closely, recognizing shapes, and discovering how simple forms can come together to create something beautiful!
