The Art of Observing Chickens

As I’m sure you now know, we have some new feathered friends here at CMP. Our chickens have taken up their permanent residence in their coop on the east side of the “soccer field” above The Glenn. We have a total of 14 chickens and they sure are growing fast! We won’t have 14 for too much longer since our rooster friends do have to be returned according to the City of San Diego Chicken Rules.(https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/legacy/development-services/pdf/news/keepingchickens.pdf). So make sure to check them out before they leave!

We’ve had a lot of fun seeing our chickens grow from tiny little yellow fluff balls into the little chicken teenagers they currently are. It all started with Arianne and her idea to have chickens. Then it was a rush to design a coop. Ms. Erin spent lots of time figuring out the final design. Lastly Mossimo did an amazing job building it so our chickens had a home (or as Mossimo calls it, a mansion =) to go to when they outgrew their brooder. You’ll see them taking full advantage of their space, taking dust baths, foraging for bugs, and sun-bathing out in their chicken run.

We’re still trying to figure out exactly who’s who, as in who’s a rooster, and what breed each type of chicken is. The kids have all had a chance to come up and give them some treats and some have gotten to pet them too as the chickens are becoming increasingly friendly. We hope to eventually have “well-trained” chickens that can come out on the lawn and hang out. When the chicks are around 5-7 months old (Sept-Nov) we’ll start to get some eggs! We can’t wait! We purposely built the nesting boxes very low so the kids can gather them. And since it’s important to gather eggs daily, we’ll be starting up a volunteer sign-up list so families can sign up to come on a weekend day to collect the eggs and keep them for their family. Free eggs and chicken cuddles, win-win =)! If you have any questions about the chickens, or are a chicken guru wanting to share your knowledge, feel free to come chat with Erin!
